Groundnuts will definitely rank amongst the most loved snacks in Nigeria and some other parts of the world. Despite the popularity of groundnuts (or peanuts in some quarters), it has been vilified severely and tagged as the main cause of pimples breakout in both men and women. How true is this?
Medically speaking, groundnuts themselves do not cause pimples; at least not directly. Most pimples are a result of hormonal imbalance or fluctuation. Groundnuts contains a chemical similar to a hormone in the body called androgen. An increase in the Androgen in the body or a similar substance increases the skin’s tendency to create oil. Oil on the surface of the skin is what eventually leads to pimples by triggering the growth rate of acne causing bacterias on the surface of the skin.
There are other foods that triggers the production of androgen which ultimately results in pimples.
Examples are: Dairy products, refined sugars, foods rich in omega-6 fats (margarines and most vegetable oils), chocolate, fast foods, shellfish etc.
Pimples are formed when the skin’s pores are blocked with dead skin cells, excess oil, and sometimes bacteria.
During puberty, hormones often cause oil glands to produce excess oil, which sometimes increases pimples.
